Driving Licenses Now Available at the Airport

Tourists visiting Sri Lanka can now get a temporary driving license right at the airport. A new office has opened at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake to make it easier for foreigners to drive in the country.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Location: Find the new counter in the arrivals terminal of the airport.

  • What you need: A valid driver’s license from your home country (no learner’s permits), your passport, and a valid Sri Lankan visa. If your license isn’t in English, you’ll need a certified translation.

  • Cost: The license costs LKR 2,000 per month.

  • What you can drive: The license is only for light cars and motorcycles.

  • What’s not allowed: You cannot use this license to drive a three-wheeler (tuk-tuk) or a heavy vehicle. You’ll need to go to the Department of Motor Traffic office in Werahera for those.

This new service aims to save tourists time and hassle. They can start their trip without the long journey to a government office in Colombo.
